Drug detection in drug enforcement
Innovative technologies and test systems ensure effective and efficient protection against illegal imports and drug trafficking, especially in countries with high levels of imports and exports.
Securetec AG works in close cooperation with agencies both within and outside of Germany to develop detection systems, such as surface and wipe tests, that provide reliable support to customs officials, border guards and drug enforcement officers.
Drug production in Europe has increased and diversified. In addition to cannabis, heroin, cocaine and amphetamines, new psychoactive substances are increasingly being produced, sold and consumed in the European market.
Hard drugs like cocaine and heroin are gaining ground in Europe. Cocaine purity has increased and users are growing in number. In 2020, cocaine seizures reached an all-time high of 181 tonnes.1
Heroin use is also reaching shocking new records. For example, almost 16 tonnes of acetic anhydride – a precursor for heroin – were seized in the European Union in 2018. Another 9 tonnes were stopped before they could enter the market. Labs were also discovered in Eastern Europe, Spain and the Netherlands, where morphine was being used to make heroin. This, coupled with a growing number of morphine and opium seizures, suggests not only that heroin consumption within the EU is growing, but also that the drug is increasingly being manufactured here too.1
The proliferation, availability and potential for increased consumption are all cause for concern and indicate just how urgently appropriate solutions to combat drug trafficking are needed.
Reliable drug detection with the DrugWipe® A wipe test
A surface or wipe test like DrugWipe® A provides valuable support to enforcement officers. Thanks to leading-edge antibody detection technology, even the tiniest trace quantities of target substances can now be detected and identified. This applies equally to detection on surfaces and to the screening of freight containers. With the DrugWipe® A wipe test, enforcement officers can detect traces of drugs roughly comparable to a teaspoon of sugar dissolved in an Olympic-size swimming pool with a water volume of 2.5 million litres.
The DrugWipe® A wipe test is also an important tool for detecting the possession, trafficking and consumption of illegal substances within just a few minutes when seeking to establish the cause of an accident, performing drug screening of prisoners and parolees or carrying out individual checks.
