Tough times ahead for drug drivers in Hong Kong

Neubiberg, 3 March 2021 – Major factors in the Hong Kong police force’s decision to opt for DrugWipe 6 S Ketamine included increased objectivity, substantial time savings and ease of use.

Since 19 February, the Hong Kong police force has been using the DrugWipe 6 S Ketamine saliva rapid screening test for roadside drug screening.

The extremely reliable test for mobile use delivers fast, precise results. DrugWipe 6 S detects consumption of up to seven drug groups: Cannabis, opiates, cocaine, amphetamines, methamphetamines (MDMA, ecstasy), benzodiazepines and ketamine.

The test left Chief Superintendent Wilson Ng of the Hong Kong police convinced, “The method we’d been using took far longer, both on the street and at the police station.” He went on, “With that test, it took around half an hour to obtain a clear result. The current ROFT (Rapid Oral Fluid Test) requires 8 to 10 minutes at most, so we save a lot of time.” Ng also noted that the DrugWipe 6 S was far more objective.

All officers who will be using the test for roadside screening from now on will receive intensive training in the form of a one-day course to ensure correct handling of DrugWipe 6 S.

If a driver refuses to take a saliva test, this is treated as an offence in Hong Kong, subject to a maximum fine of up to $ 25,000, a prison sentence of up to 3 years and driving disqualification. The same penalty applies to drivers found to be driving under the influence of drugs.
