One study conducted by the University of Frankfurt in 2018 determined that consumption had doubled in just 3 years. And laughing gas is not only becoming an established party drug \u2013 it\u2019s also being consumed on a daily basis by some users.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3789\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3789\" class=\"wp-image-3789 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.securetec.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/lachgas-diagramm_3x2.jpg\" alt=\"Lachgas Diagramm\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3789\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Number of reports of severe harm in connection with the use of nitrous oxide in the PubMed database, 2000-2021. Source: EMCDDA, Lisbon<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>The buzz is short-lived \u2013 anything from 30 seconds to a few minutes. On the other hand, it\u2019s both inexpensive and legal \u2013 as a result, laughing gas has made the leap to becoming a recognised recreational drug. The gas is consumed directly from whipped cream chargers or from balloons. The chargers\/cannisters are available in bulk packs from discount stores, while filled balloons are available from street vendors or certain shops for no more than 5 euros apiece. Online sales of bulk packs are also booming.<\/p>\n<p>Users report experiencing heightened sensory perception, euphoria and a tingling sensation throughout the entire body. Some people feel the urge to laugh and may speak with a squeaky \u201cMickey Mouse\u201d voice.<\/p>\n<p>If an individual only consumes laughing gas as a one-off \u2013 for example, as a gag at a party \u2013 there are usually no negative outcomes. However, some users go much further than this. They may take up to 200 \u201chits\u201d spread out over the course of a day or inhale the gas 100 times in rapid succession at a party. This is harmful to health and can even be fatal. In the Netherlands, where misuse is rife, police statistics recorded 63 accidental deaths due to the inhalation of laughing gas between the start of 2019 and October 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) in Lisbon is tracking and documenting the growing consumption of laughing gas throughout Europe. The substance is not yet included in the German Drug and Addiction Report. However, based on the annual studies published by the University of Frankfurt, it can be assumed that laughing gas is playing an increasingly important role in Germany also. Up to 2021, there was a sharp rise in use among young consumers in particular. 2022 levels were marginally lower than the previous year. Current hotspots for laughing gas are the Netherlands, Britain and Denmark, while figures are also rising in France. In the United States, the New York Times has reported on the growing health problems caused by laughing gas. Despite this, banning the gas is problematic because it has many common uses in technology and medicine. In the Netherlands, it is expected that the ban recently introduced there (see box, left) will succeed in bringing street vendors and laughing gas caf\u00e9s under control. The Dutch police can now also take action if they find private individuals in possession of bulk packs or large gas canisters. Efforts to put a similar ban in place have been made in Britain and Denmark.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n<div  class='hr av-g82jd-83b065b6d70837985c8485fa31cc1e56 hr-default  avia-builder-el-3  el_after_av_textblock  el_before_av_textblock '><span class='hr-inner '><span class=\"hr-inner-style\"><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<section  class='av_textblock_section av-mgq70hbs-9dc47e015acf20dba1cff76c9d11c83e '   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><h2>What is laughing gas?<\/h2>\n<p>Laughing gas, or nitrous oxide, is a colourless gas that is an oxide of nitrogen. The gas originally became well known as an inhalational anaesthetic agent, especially in dentistry. The gas also has industrial applications in various technology sectors. For example, it is used as a whipping agent in whipped cream dispensers. However, it has also been used for entertainment purposes since as far back as the eighteenth century.<\/p>\n<p>As well as relieving pain and producing a numbing effect, it also delivers a short high that is both euphoric and dissociative. The side effects are no laughing matter \u2013 ranging from frostbite injuries caused by the consumption of whipped cream chargers, to nausea, paralysis, vertigo, acute oxygen deprivation, damage to the central nervous system and even death.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n<div  class='hr av-371nxt-943b01c66f283990178f02ab21b2bac5 hr-default  avia-builder-el-5  el_after_av_textblock  el_before_av_textblock '><span class='hr-inner '><span class=\"hr-inner-style\"><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<section  class='av_textblock_section av-mmta2ua1-42376c84734dd3cf113b5caf21c420ec '   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><h2><strong>Banning laughing gas?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Due to the current situation, a ban on laughing gas is currently being discussed in many countries. This presents some problems because nitrous oxide is also used for many harmless purposes \u2013 as a whipping agent in whipped cream dispensers, to inflate balloons and in various areas of technology. To this day, it also continues to be used for medical purposes. The gas has been legally available throughout the EU since 2016, following a judgement by the European Court of Justice that ruled that it would no longer be governed by the Medicines Act. Despite this, countries such as Denmark are seeking to regulate laughing gas. In Britain, it already falls under the national NPS regulations. This makes it illegal to bring laughing gas into circulation for its psychoactive effects. In the Netherlands, the possession and sale of laughing gas has been illegal with a small number of exceptions since the start of 2023.
