Employers have a duty of care to their employees and must prevent accidents caused by drug consumption. Saliva tests ensure greater safety at work, without infringing on employees\u2019 personal space.<\/p>\n<p>Alcohol and drug consumption and the misuse of medication permeate all social strata. Studies suggest that 7% of the working-age population in Germany use illegal drugs.<\/p>\n<h2>Screening as a sign of responsibility<\/h2>\n<p>Drug screening has long been common practice for increasing safety in the workplace. This is true in particular of employees in positions of responsibility \u2013 such as flight safety personnel \u2013 or individuals who carry out high-risk tasks, such as working with high-voltage lines.<\/p>\n<p>Drugs impact the user\u2019s awareness and behaviour and may therefore cause accidents. As well as the direct physical symptoms and effects, changes in attitude towards work and social behaviour may also constitute a potential source of risk in the workplace. Dependency has many faces and addicts may, for example, be more likely to take risks, have delayed reactions or find it difficult to concentrate.<\/p>\n<p>Employers need to take action because of their duty of care to each and every employee and their responsibility for general safety in the workplace. If employers choose to close their eyes to their responsibility in this regard or to simply look the other way in a misguided attempt at understanding, they will be in breach of their duty of care to their employees.
