Drug driving

Rapid screening tests allow drug consumption to be identified any time, anywhere. Saliva tests outperform urine tests when it comes to reliability, convenience and hygiene.

The effects of drug use and the functional impairments it causes are less obvious than those of alcohol consumption. That’s why rapid screening drug tests are essential. They enable easy, hygienic and efficient drug screening by police officers directly on-site. In the area of road safety, rapid screening tests have long been part of the standard toolkit used by police forces. In Germany today, virtually all police patrol cars carry rapid screening drug tests.

Officers can collect the samples themselves. In contrast to urine testing, tampering with saliva samples is virtually impossible. The drivers’ personal space is only slightly infringed, which makes them more willing to cooperate. At the same time, testers find it easier to overcome their reluctance to use saliva tests, as they have no direct contact with the sample medium. In almost all cases the results can be verified using a blood sample since there is a close correlation between the windows of detection for the active substance in saliva and blood. Countries such as Australia, France and Spain have already introduced saliva-based confirmation analysis.

Lab testing confirms initial suspicions
Similarly, regular drug screening has long been standard practice in the area of workplace safety, especially for employees in positions of particular responsibility – such as flight safety personnel – or individuals who carry out high-risk tasks, such as working with high-voltage lines.

However, mobile roadside or in-company drug tests will never replace laboratory testing. Even with a test reliability score of 99%, a laboratory analysis of saliva or blood is legally required in order to confirm the initial suspicion.
